Power and freedom in the spirit of the exemplary industrial city
The Arteplage Biel-Bienne was designed by two teams of architects: Coop Himmelb(l)au was responsible for the buildings on the lake and the architecture company GLS Gebert, Liechti, Schmid for those on land.
Following the architectural competition, the architects GLS Gebert, Liechti, Schmid from the second prize-winning team Studio 2/Bauzeit were given the task of planning the buildings on land. With the extensive wooden deck as a promenade for the Arteplage, they have created an axial situation similar to that which was realised a good seventy years ago as a grand design for Biel's Bahnhofstrasse. The urban link between the city and the lake (Arteplage), which has been overdue for decades, will be realised especially for the opening of Expo.02 with the new, elegant railway embankment subway.
